The Order was instituted by Major General His Highness Sir Jagatjit Singh Bahadur, Maharaja of Kapurthala, in 1897. It was a general order of merit with both military and civil divisions and awarded in three classes to members of the royal household, state officials, military officers and other prominent meritorious persons. The Maharaja was a noted Francophile and it is suggested that the Order was designed and manufactured by Arthus Bertrand of Paris. The Order became obsolete in 1950 following Indian independence.
