Multan, VS1829, Rupee, 1st Occupation, Countermarked with 'Raij 1188' Lot 1401 Steve Album Auction 17 SIKH EMPIRE: AR rupee (11.46g), Multan, VS1829, KM-83, Herrli-11.01.04, struck during the first year the Sikh conquered Multan from the Durranis (=AH1184), countermarked rayij 1188 on obverse, EF mark on VF-EF host, RRRR. The Sikh kingdom seized Multan in AH1184 (=VS1829). In AH1188, the Durrani army besieged the city, looted the Sikh treasury, but failed to capture the city (later retaken by the Durranis in AH1194). The Durrani government allegedly melted most of the looted coins for recoinage, but a few were simply countermarked rayij ("current") plus the date AH1188. This countermark is found on various Durrani rupees and some Mughal and Iranian silver coins, but is virtually unknown on Sikh coins. This piece is of the greatest rarity, and the host is itself extremely rare. Estimate $700-900
